World Book Day takes place on the 1st of March each year. The event is to celebrate the work of authors and illustrators but is most importantly known for encouraging kids to read.
Many different organisations have come together to help World Book Day become the large event it is today. All schools now receive a £1 voucher towards books for every single pupil in the school. Nearly all book stores participate in the offer and every year some £1 books are published so children can get a brand new book without having to pay a single penny. If they want to choose another book then the voucher gives them £1 off any book over £2.99.
Schools often participate in World Book Day fancy dress on the 1st of March and encourage children to come to school dressed as one of their favourite characters from a book. The teachers will often join in with the fancy dress fun and dress up as their favourite character and will teach the children about this character too. It is a great way for the pupils to see their teachers in a new light and learn about new stories and characters.
Many schools will have a fancy dress competition judged on who is wearing the best costume and has done the greatest job on the project that has been set to go along with the event. I have heard of projects where pupils will have to write about the character they have dressed up as and state why they are their favourite character.
Not all books have to be stories, for those at a really young age even books like Where's Wally are helpful in making the thought of reading a book more appealing. Here at Simply Fancy Dress we have great Where's Wally Costumes that are suitable for both boys and girls.
One of the £1 books on offer for WBD 2012 is the "What The Ladybird Heard" song book. This book was especially created for the younger ones participating in World Book Day and could be the song heard sang in many assembly halls across the country in infant schools this year. This sing-a-long story book includes many animals, so lots of potential World Book Day outfits for the children to choose from. We expect our Child ladybird costumes to be a hit with many fans of this story. The Child Ladybird costume at £10.77 is a great example of a high quality yet cheap fancy dress costume from Simply fancy dress perfect for World Book Day.
As the children get older they are exposed to more book characters and therefore have more World Book Day costume ideas to choose from. Hugely popular books like Harry Potter have made the leap into the film industry and that means everyone pictures the same costume for each character. Here at Simply we have all the Harry Potter characters you'd want to dress up as including Harry Potter costumes, Ron Weasley costumes, Hermione Granger costumes and Voldemort costumes.
Our World Book Day costume selection doesn't end with Harry Potter. We will have characters from most of your favourite books ranging from the young with our Very Hungry Caterpillar costume and to the older with our awesome Lord of the Rings costumes.
It's not all about the kids dressing up, the teachers can have some fun too with our World Book Day costumes for teachers. A chance to introduce a new character to the pupils or just to gain some respect by dressing up as someone cool, whatever route you choose, we have the costumes here to transform you into anyone you want to be.
The younger generations may not remember or even have heard of classic stories like the Wizard of Oz or Sherlock Holmes so characters from these stories may be ideal for teachers to dress up as so they can go on to tell their pupils about the hugely popular stories. The kids would love to see their teacher dressed as the Tin Man or Dorothy and would find the old fashioned attire of Sherlock Holmes very interesting.
